He studied singing under Albert Hoeberg and Hermann Spiro in Copenhagen and made his debut in 1908, as tenor, at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen as Sverkel in ‘’Liden Kirsten’’ of Hartmann. Till 1913 he appeared at the Royal Opera and then joined for the 1913-1924 seasons to the Deutsche Opernhaus in Berlin. Here he perfected his vocal with Lilli Lehmann, Luise Reuss-Belce and Richard Loewe. In 1919 he changed from tenor to baritone, but since 1921 again sang tenor parts. From 1918 to 22 he appeared in a number of silent films (‘’Der müde Tod' mit Lil Dagover’’, ‘’Herrin der Welt’’ with Mia May and Michael Bohnen). In  the 1925-1930 seasons he was a soloist of the Landestheater in Gera (Thüringen). After his retirement, he worked as a pedagogue in Copenhagen, then in Helsinki. Married the singer Emma Vilmar-Hansen.
